Be a Volunteer

SHRESTHA will engage and provide identified children, specially slum, street and orphan children in various activities. These will include Education, Health and Hygiene education, Personality Development, so as to build and provide them an opportunity to develop themselves as the responsible citizen of the country. This will further help them to live into the main stream of society.

We believe education is at the heart of improving the children’s prospects – not just for the children, but for their parents, too. We see it as equally important to engage with their parents and community leaders in the slum area to help them understand the value of education, as a way to help the whole family’s prospects in the long term. Through building relationships with the parents over the past few years, we gained their trust and support, which is critical to ensuring that the children continue to attend school for as long as possible. The first we are in the heart of the slum, and we regularly invite parents to special events at our new schoolroom in a basement nearby.

We also put a strong focus on fun and social skills at the Shrestha school. We celebrate festivals and birthdays with the children, which gives them a lot of happiness, and each school day ends with a session of sports and games, to make sure they always leave with a smile.

Project Needs

We want to address the education deprivation among the underprivileged and marginalized community living in the slum area in the city of Jaipur.

Children in this program come from slum area in the beginning it was not easy to bring them for education the reason is in slum area each family have five to six children and parents have not fix work there earning is not enough. Children want to go school and study but the parents want to send them on work just like begging, shoe polish, garbage collection etc. So lot of talking and field work some are ok to send children for education at our center. And now continuously children come every day. On this project we are work since 2010.

What our volunteers do

Volunteers help the children at the Shrestha in a variety of ways.

TEACHING - Volunteers can teach a range of subjects, for example, English, ICT, Maths, Music or vocational subjects like handicrafts and art.

GAMES AND SPORTS - You don't have to teach in order to help the Shrestha children enjoy a more rewarding education. Activities like games and sports are a central part of developing their social skills and helping them stay fit and healthy. Volunteers can help organise these activities and take part along with the children.

DANCING AND MUSIC - Can you dance or play an instrument? You could pass on your skills to the Shrestha children, and perhaps learn a few new moves from them!

FUNDRAISING - If you'd be interested in raising money to support Shrestha's work, you'd be welcome to come and see how Shrestha works first hand. You can then help us with fundraising among your own friends, family and business connections at home. Organize events to increase Shrestha’s popularity locally or/and abroad. Create and advance systems and methods for local and global fundraising

Who volunteers with Shrestha

AGE - We welcome adult volunteers of any age, from 18 years old.

DISABILITY - We will do our best to offer placements to anyone who would like to volunteer with us. If you have a disability, please contact us to talk about your needs.

NATIONALITY - Wherever you're from in the world, we'd love to have you as a Shrestha volunteer. You will need to get a visa to enter India.

SKILLS - You don't need any qualifications to volunteer with us. For teaching English at the school, English doesn't have to be your first language, but you will need to have a working knowledge of the language. If you speak other languages, we're also interested in hearing from you, to give the children some exposure to other cultures and languages. You don't need to speak Hindi, as there'll always be a Hindi-speaking teacher working alongside you.

AVAILABILITY - We can offer placements from one week upwards. Perhaps you're travelling in India and would like to experience life at an NGO for a week, or maybe you're a teacher who'd like to spend an academic year with us. Whatever your circumstances, we'd be keen to hear from you.

COUPLES AND GROUPS - We can arrange volunteer placements for couples (married and unmarried) and groups.

As we are a local Indian grass-roots NGO who serves and supports children and women in need we expect our volunteers and interns to:
- Be ready to learn about Indian culture and deal respectful with intercultural differences.
- Be relayable and flexible or be as open minded as possible
- Behave and dress respectful according to conservative Indian society.

We want you to enjoy every day of your precious time with us. We trust on your honest feedback to create a successful atmosphere for both volunteers and local staff.
